천 마디의 빈 말보다 한 마디의 참된 말이 낫습니다. 백 년의 헛된 삶보다 깨어 있는 하루가 낫습니다. 숫자의 허영을 걷어내고 「질」의 기준을 세우는 품입니다.

Better one true word than a thousand empty ones; better one waking day than a hundred heedless years. A chapter that strips away the vanity of numbers.

Sahassamapi ce vācā, anatthapadasaṁhitā; Ekaṁ atthapadaṁ seyyo, yaṁ sutvā upasammati.

Even though a speech be a thousand (of words), but made up of senseless words, one word of sense is better, which if a man hears, he becomes quiet.

천 마디의 말이라도 뜻 없는 말로 이루어졌다면, 사람이 듣고 고요해지는 뜻 있는 한 마디가 더 낫다.

Bāhiyadārucīriyattheravatthu Sahassamapi ce gāthā, anatthapadasaṁhitā; Ekaṁ gāthāpadaṁ seyyo, yaṁ sutvā upasammati.

Even though a Gatha (poem) be a thousand (of words), but made up of senseless words, one word of a Gatha is better, which if a man hears, he becomes quiet.

천 마디의 게송이라도 뜻 없는 말로 이루어졌다면, 사람이 듣고 고요해지는 게송 한 마디가 더 낫다.

Kuṇḍalakesitherīvatthu Yo ca gāthā sataṁ bhāse, anatthapadasaṁhitā; Ekaṁ dhammapadaṁ seyyo, yaṁ sutvā upasammati.

Though a man recite a hundred Gathas made up of senseless words, one word of the law is better, which if a man hears, he becomes quiet.

뜻 없는 말로 이루어진 백 개의 게송을 암송한다 해도, 사람이 듣고 고요해지는 법의 한 마디가 더 낫다.

Yo sahassaṁ sahassena, saṅgāme mānuse jine; Ekañca jeyyamattānaṁ, sa ve saṅgāmajuttamo.

If one man conquer in battle a thousand times thousand men, and if another conquer himself, he is the greatest of conquerors.

전투에서 천만의 적을 물리치는 사람이 있다 해도, 스스로를 이기는 이가 가장 위대한 승리자이다.

104–105

Anatthapucchakabrāhmaṇavatthu Attā have jitaṁ seyyo, yā cāyaṁ itarā pajā; Attadantassa posassa, niccaṁ saññatacārino. Neva devo na gandhabbo, na māro saha brahmunā; Jitaṁ apajitaṁ kayirā, tathārūpassa jantuno.

One's own self conquered is better than all other people; not even a god, a Gandharva, not Mara with Brahman could change into defeat the victory of a man who has vanquished himself, and always lives under restraint.

다른 모든 사람을 이기는 것보다 스스로를 이기는 것이 낫다. 스스로를 이기고 항상 절제하며 사는 이의 승리를 패배로 바꿀 수 있는 이는, 신도, 건달바도, 마라와 브라흐마도 없다.

Sāriputtattherassa mātulabrāhmaṇavatthu Māse māse sahassena, yo yajetha sataṁ samaṁ; Ekañca bhāvitattānaṁ, muhuttamapi pūjaye; Sāyeva pūjanā seyyo, yañce vassasataṁ hutaṁ.

If a man for a hundred years sacrifice month after month with a thousand, and if he but for one moment pay homage to a man whose soul is grounded (in true knowledge), better is that homage than sacrifice for a hundred years.

달마다 천의 공양으로 백 년을 제사한다 해도, 지혜에 굳게 선 이에게 잠깐 경배하는 그 경배가 백 년의 제사보다 낫다.

Sāriputtattherassa bhāgineyyavatthu Yo ca vassasataṁ jantu, aggiṁ paricare vane; Ekañca bhāvitattānaṁ, muhuttamapi pūjaye; Sāyeva pūjanā seyyo, yañce vassasataṁ hutaṁ.

If a man for a hundred years worship Agni (fire) in the forest, and if he but for one moment pay homage to a man whose soul is grounded (in true knowledge), better is that homage than sacrifice for a hundred years.

백 년 동안 숲에서 아그니(불)를 섬긴다 해도, 지혜에 굳게 선 이에게 잠깐 경배하는 그 경배가 백 년의 제사보다 낫다.

Sāriputtatherassa sahāyakabrāhmaṇavatthu Yaṁ kiñci yiṭṭhaṁ va hutaṁ va loke, Saṁvaccharaṁ yajetha puññapekkho; Sabbampi taṁ na catubhāgameti, Abhivādanā ujjugatesu seyyo.

Whatever a man sacrifice in this world as an offering or as an oblation for a whole year in order to gain merit, the whole of it is not worth a quarter (a farthing); reverence shown to the righteous is better.

이 세상에서 공덕을 얻으려고 일 년 내내 공양과 제물을 바친다 해도 그 전체가 4분의 1어치도 되지 못한다. 의로운 이에게 보이는 경배가 더 낫다.

Āyuvaḍḍhanakumāravatthu Abhivādanasīlissa, niccaṁ vuḍḍhāpacāyino; Cattāro dhammā vaḍḍhanti, āyu vaṇṇo sukhaṁ balaṁ.

He who always greets and constantly reveres the aged, four things will increase to him, viz. life, beauty, happiness, power.

늘 어른에게 인사하고 늘 공경하는 이에게는 네 가지가 자라난다. 수명과 아름다움과 행복과 힘이다.

Saṅkiccasāmaṇeravatthu Yo ca vassasataṁ jīve, dussīlo asamāhito; Ekāhaṁ jīvitaṁ seyyo, sīlavantassa jhāyino.

But he who lives a hundred years, vicious and unrestrained, a life of one day is better if a man is virtuous and reflecting.

악덕에 물들고 절제 없이 백 년을 사는 것보다, 덕이 있고 사유하는 이의 하루가 낫다.

Khāṇukoṇḍaññattheravatthu Yo ca vassasataṁ jīve, duppañño asamāhito; Ekāhaṁ jīvitaṁ seyyo, paññavantassa jhāyino.

And he who lives a hundred years, ignorant and unrestrained, a life of one day is better if a man is wise and reflecting.

무지하고 절제 없이 백 년을 사는 것보다, 슬기롭고 사유하는 이의 하루가 낫다.

Sabbadāsattheravatthu Yo ca vassasataṁ jīve, kusīto hīnavīriyo; Ekāhaṁ jīvitaṁ seyyo, vīriyamārabhato daḷhaṁ.

And he who lives a hundred years, idle and weak, a life of one day is better if a man has attained firm strength.

게으르고 나약하게 백 년을 사는 것보다, 굳센 힘을 얻은 이의 하루가 낫다.

Paṭācārātherīvatthu Yo ca vassasataṁ jīve, apassaṁ udayabbayaṁ; Ekāhaṁ jīvitaṁ seyyo, passato udayabbayaṁ.

And he who lives a hundred years, not seeing beginning and end, a life of one day is better if a man sees beginning and end.

시작과 끝을 보지 못하며 백 년을 사는 것보다, 시작과 끝을 보는 이의 하루가 낫다.

Kisāgotamīvatthu Yo ca vassasataṁ jīve, apassaṁ amataṁ padaṁ; Ekāhaṁ jīvitaṁ seyyo, passato amataṁ padaṁ.

And he who lives a hundred years, not seeing the immortal place, a life of one day is better if a man sees the immortal place.

죽지 않는 곳을 보지 못하며 백 년을 사는 것보다, 죽지 않는 곳을 보는 이의 하루가 낫다.

Bahuputtikattherīvatthu Yo ca vassasataṁ jīve, apassaṁ dhammamuttamaṁ; Ekāhaṁ jīvitaṁ seyyo, passato dhammamuttamaṁ. Sahassavaggo aṭṭhamo.

And he who lives a hundred years, not seeing the highest law, a life of one day is better if a man sees the highest law.

가장 높은 법을 보지 못하며 백 년을 사는 것보다, 가장 높은 법을 보는 이의 하루가 낫다.
