이 품의 주제 — 깨달은 이의 모습 / The consummated
여행을 마치고 짐을 내려놓은 이의 초상입니다. 속박을 모두 벗은 이에게는 고통이 남지 않으며, 그 길은 하늘을 나는 새의 자취처럼 헤아리기 어렵습니다.
A portrait of one whose journey is done and whose burden is laid down. Their path is hard to trace, like the track of birds in the sky.
마음 다스리기
잠들기 전, 오늘 내려놓을 수 있었던 짐 하나를 떠올립니다.
Before sleep, recall one burden you set down today.
Gataddhino visokassa, vippamuttassa sabbadhi; Sabbaganthappahīnassa, pariḷāho na vijjati.
There is no suffering for him who has finished his journey, and abandoned grief, who has freed himself on all sides, and thrown off all fetters.
여정을 마치고 슬픔을 버리고, 사방에서 벗어나 모든 속박을 벗어 던진 이에게는 고통이 없다.
Mahākassapattheravatthu Uyyuñjanti satīmanto, na nikete ramanti te; Haṁsāva pallalaṁ hitvā, okamokaṁ jahanti te.
They depart with their thoughts well-collected, they are not happy in their abode; like swans who have left their lake, they leave their house and home.
생각을 잘 모은 채 떠나는 이들, 거처에서 즐거워하지 않는 이들—호수를 떠난 백조처럼 집과 고향을 떠난다.
Belaṭṭhasīsattheravatthu Yesaṁ sannicayo natthi, ye pariññātabhojanā; Suññato animitto ca, vimokkho yesaṁ gocaro; Ākāseva sakuntānaṁ, gati tesaṁ durannayā.
Men who have no riches, who live on recognised food, who have perceived void and unconditioned freedom (Nirvana), their path is difficult to understand, like that of birds in the air.
재물 없이, 인정된 음식으로 살아가며, 텅 비고 조건 없는 자유를 깨달은 이들의 길은, 새의 허공 길처럼 이해하기 어렵다.
Anuruddhattheravatthu Yassāsavā parikkhīṇā, āhāre ca anissito; Suññato animitto ca, vimokkho yassa gocaro; Ākāseva sakuntānaṁ, padaṁ tassa durannayaṁ.
He whose appetites are stilled, who is not absorbed in enjoyment, who has perceived void and unconditioned freedom (Nirvana), his path is difficult to understand, like that of birds in the air.
욕망이 가라앉고 즐거움에 빠지지 않으며, 텅 비고 조건 없는 자유를 깨달은 이의 길은, 새의 허공 길처럼 이해하기 어렵다.
Mahākaccāyanattheravatthu Yassindriyāni samathaṅgatāni, Assā yathā sārathinā sudantā; Pahīnamānassa anāsavassa, Devāpi tassa pihayanti tādino.
The gods even envy him whose senses, like horses well broken in by the driver, have been subdued, who is free from pride, and free from appetites.
마부에게 잘 길들여진 말처럼 감각이 제어되고, 오만과 욕망에서 벗어난 이는 신들까지도 그를 부러워한다.
Sāriputtattheravatthu Pathavisamo no virujjhati, Indakhilupamo tādi subbato; Rahadova apetakaddamo, Saṁsārā na bhavanti tādino.
Such a one who does his duty is tolerant like the earth, like Indra's bolt; he is like a lake without mud; no new births are in store for him.
이처럼 자기 의무를 다하는 이는 땅처럼, 인드라의 금강처럼 참으며, 흙 없는 호수 같다. 그에게는 다시 태어남이 남아 있지 않다.
Kosambivāsitissattherasāmaṇeravatthu Santaṁ tassa manaṁ hoti, santā vācā ca kamma ca; Sammadaññāvimuttassa, upasantassa tādino.
His thought is quiet, quiet are his word and deed, when he has obtained freedom by true knowledge, when he has thus become a quiet man.
참된 지혜로 자유를 얻어 이렇게 고요한 사람이 되면, 생각이 고요하고 말과 행위도 고요하다.
Sāriputtattheravatthu Assaddho akataññū ca, sandhicchedo ca yo naro; Hatāvakāso vantāso, sa ve uttamaporiso.
The man who is free from credulity, but knows the uncreated, who has cut all ties, removed all temptations, renounced all desires, he is the greatest of men.
쉽게 믿지 않으며 생기지 않은 것을 알고, 모든 속박을 끊고 모든 유혹을 제거하고 모든 욕망을 버린 이—그가 가장 위대한 사람이다.
Khadiravaniyarevatattheravatthu Gāme vā yadi vāraññe, Ninne vā yadi vā thale; Yattha arahanto viharanti, Taṁ bhūmirāmaṇeyyakaṁ.
In a hamlet or in a forest, in the deep water or on the dry land, wherever venerable persons (Arhanta) dwell, that place is delightful.
마을에든 숲에든, 깊은 물에든 마른 땅에든, 존경할 만한 이들이 머무는 곳은 그 어디나 즐거운 곳이다.
Aññataraitthivatthu Ramaṇīyāni araññāni, yattha na ramatī jano; Vītarāgā ramissanti, na te kāmagavesino. Arahantavaggo sattamo.
Forests are delightful; where the world finds no delight, there the passionless will find delight, for they look not for pleasures.
숲은 즐겁다. 세상이 즐거워하지 않는 곳에서 욕망 없는 이들은 즐거워한다. 그들은 쾌락을 구하지 않기 때문이다.
