정진품(精進品)

이 품의 주제 — 놓치지 않는 마음 / Heedfulness
정진(appamāda)은 「놓치지 않음」입니다. 죽지 않는 길은 특별한 은총이 아니라 하루하루를 놓치지 않는 마음에서 열립니다. 스님들은 이 품을 「잠들지 않는 눈」이라 불렀습니다.
Appamāda is heedfulness—not letting life slip by. The deathless opens not by grace but by a mind that does not drift through its days.
마음 다스리기
하루에 한 번, 자동으로 흘러가던 습관 속에서 잠깐 멈춥니다.
Once a day, pause in the middle of an automatic habit.
Appamādo amatapadaṁ, pamādo maccuno padaṁ; Appamattā na mīyanti, ye pamattā yathā matā.
Earnestness is the path of immortality (Nirvana), thoughtlessness the path of death. Those who are in earnest do not die, those who are thoughtless are as if dead already.
정진은 불사(열반)의 길이고, 산만함은 죽음의 길이다. 정진하는 이는 죽지 않고, 산만한 이는 이미 죽은 것과 같다.
Evaṁ visesato ñatvā, appamādamhi paṇḍitā; Appamāde pamodanti, ariyānaṁ gocare ratā.
Those who are advanced in earnestness, having understood this clearly, delight in earnestness, and rejoice in the knowledge of the Ariyas (the elect).
정진에 앞선 지혜로운 이들은 이를 밝게 깨달아, 정진을 사랑하고 성인들의 지혜를 기뻐한다.
Te jhāyino sātatikā, niccaṁ daḷhaparakkamā; Phusanti dhīrā nibbānaṁ, yogakkhemaṁ anuttaraṁ.
These wise people, meditative, steady, always possessed of strong powers, attain to Nirvana, the highest happiness.
이 지혜로운 이들, 명상하고 흔들림 없으며 항상 굳센 힘을 지닌 이들은 최고의 행복 열반에 이른다.
Kumbaghosakaseṭṭhivatthu Uṭṭhānavato satīmato, Sucikammassa nisammakārino; Saññatassa dhammajīvino, Appamattassa yasobhivaḍḍhati.
If an earnest person has roused himself, if he is not forgetful, if his deeds are pure, if he acts with consideration, if he restrains himself, and lives according to law,--then his glory will increase.
정진하는 이가 스스로를 일으키고, 잊지 않으며, 행위가 청정하고, 헤아려 행동하며, 스스로를 절제하고 법에 따라 산다면, 그의 영광은 자라날 것이다.
Cūḷapanthakavatthu Uṭṭhānenappamādena, saṁyamena damena ca; Dīpaṁ kayirātha medhāvī, yaṁ ogho nābhikīrati.
By rousing himself, by earnestness, by restraint and control, the wise man may make for himself an island which no flood can overwhelm.
스스로를 일으키고, 정진하고, 절제하고 다스림으로, 지혜로운 이는 아무 홍수도 덮지 못하는 섬을 스스로 만든다.
Bālanakkhattasaṅghuṭṭhavatthu Pamādamanuyuñjanti, bālā dummedhino janā; Appamādañca medhāvī, dhanaṁ seṭṭhaṁva rakkhati.
Fools follow after vanity, men of evil wisdom. The wise man keeps earnestness as his best jewel.
어리석은 이들은 헛된 것과 악한 지혜를 따른다. 지혜로운 이는 정진을 가장 귀한 보석으로 지킨다.
Mā pamādamanuyuñjetha, mā kāmaratisanthavaṁ; Appamatto hi jhāyanto, pappoti vipulaṁ sukhaṁ.
Follow not after vanity, nor after the enjoyment of love and lust! He who is earnest and meditative, obtains ample joy.
헛된 것을 따르지 말고, 사랑과 욕망의 즐거움을 따르지 마라. 정진하고 명상하는 이는 넉넉한 기쁨을 얻는다.
Mahākassapattheravatthu Pamādaṁ appamādena, yadā nudati paṇḍito; Paññāpāsādamāruyha, asoko sokiniṁ pajaṁ; Pabbataṭṭhova bhūmaṭṭhe, dhīro bāle avekkhati.
When the learned man drives away vanity by earnestness, he, the wise, climbing the terraced heights of wisdom, looks down upon the fools, serene he looks upon the toiling crowd, as one that stands on a mountain looks down upon them that stand upon the plain.
배운 이가 정진으로 헛됨을 몰아내면, 지혜의 높은 단에 오른 지혜로운 이는 어리석은 이들을 내려다보고, 평온하게 고단한 무리를 바라본다. 산 위에 선 이가 평지의 이들을 내려다보듯.
Pamattāpamattadvesahāyakabhikkhuvatthu Appamatto pamattesu, suttesu bahujāgaro; Abalassaṁva sīghasso, hitvā yāti sumedhaso.
Earnest among the thoughtless, awake among the sleepers, the wise man advances like a racer, leaving behind the hack.
무지한 이들 속에서 정진하고, 자는 이들 속에서 깨어 있는 지혜로운 이는 경주마처럼 나아간다. 느린 말을 뒤에 남기고.
Maghavatthu Appamādena maghavā, devānaṁ seṭṭhataṁ gato; Appamādaṁ pasaṁsanti, pamādo garahito sadā.
By earnestness did Maghavan (Indra) rise to the lordship of the gods. People praise earnestness; thoughtlessness is always blamed.
마가반(인드라)은 정진으로 신들의 주인이 되었다. 사람들은 정진을 칭송하고, 산만함은 언제나 비난받는다.
Aññatarabhikkhuvatthu Appamādarato bhikkhu, pamāde bhayadassi vā; Saṁyojanaṁ aṇuṁ thūlaṁ, ḍahaṁ aggīva gacchati.
A Bhikshu (mendicant) who delights in earnestness, who looks with fear on thoughtlessness, moves about like fire, burning all his fetters, small or large.
정진을 기뻐하고 산만함을 두려워하는 비구는 불처럼 움직이며, 크고 작은 모든 속박을 태운다.
Nigamavāsitissattheravatthu Appamādarato bhikkhu, pamāde bhayadassi vā; Abhabbo parihānāya, nibbānasseva santike. Appamādavaggo dutiyo.
A Bhikshu (mendicant) who delights in reflection, who looks with fear on thoughtlessness, cannot fall away (from his perfect state)--he is close upon Nirvana.
사유를 기뻐하고 산만함을 두려워하는 비구는 물러서지 않는다. 그는 열반에 가깝다.
